Rob Mackenzie is an artist whose practice embodies the philosophy that "creativity heals—it's the foundation of my work and purpose."
Working with line and form across themes of abstraction, architecture and nature, Rob's art explores the delicate interplay between presence and absence, where negative space holds equal importance to mark-making.
Influenced by memory, everyday beauty and visions of space, time and place, Rob brings exceptional spatial awareness to compositions that capture fleeting moments with tender precision and emotional depth. His neurodiverse perspective, shaped by a catastrophic brain hemorrhage and stroke in 2014, informs a unique artistic approach where limitation becomes liberation.
The brain hemorrhage occurred at the peak of Rob's established 16 year career as an international branding designer, resulting in right-side paralysis, aphasia and impaired vision. These challenges became catalysts for transformation. "The brain haemorrhage has shaped me but not defined me," Rob reflects. "To draw is medicine. And thankfully I have always been left-handed."
Drawing from his background in 3D environments and design, Rob creates immersive spaces through deliberate brushwork, deft penmanship and thoughtful composition. His studies of nature and human form invite viewers to experience the restorative power of the natural world, standing as both artistic achievement and profound meditation on resilience.
Rob's work invites us to witness the extraordinary within the ordinary and to reconnect with our own capacity for renewal. As a disabled artist. he is currently supported in access through his practice by his collaborator and partner in love and life, Syreeta Challinger.
